Wedding music in Airlie Beach

Roland Flynn is a live acoustic wedding musician performing in Airlie Beach and across the Whitsundays, playing solo guitar and vocals for ceremonies and receptions.

I have played weddings in Airlie Beach and across the Whitsundays, as well as in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales, and previously all over the UK.

Airlie Beach is where most Whitsundays weddings begin. Couples base themselves and their guests here, marry either on the mainland or on one of the islands, and come back to town for the reception. That makes it the most flexible place in the region to plan music around, and the easiest to add a second location to without extra cost.

A typical Airlie Beach booking covers guest arrival, the ceremony itself, then the shift into canapés and the reception. Because the venues here range from marina function rooms to open hillside lawns, the same set can need very different sound handling across one afternoon.

What to know about music in Airlie Beach

Afternoon sea breeze

The breeze along the Airlie foreshore picks up through the afternoon and will carry sound away from your guests if the PA is placed badly. Positioning speakers with the wind rather than against it, and keeping the ceremony arch out of the direct line, makes the difference between guests hearing your vows and not.

Mainland power

Established venues here almost always have mains power, so a full PA is straightforward. Foreshore and beach ceremonies usually do not, which is what the battery-powered setup is for.

Two locations in one day

Ceremony on the water or the foreshore and reception in town is a common pattern, and the pack-down and reset between them is planned into the timeline rather than eating into your reception.

Common questions

Can you play on a charter boat leaving from Airlie Beach?

Yes. Boat weddings need a compact battery-powered setup and a realistic view of how much gear can be carried aboard and stowed, which is worked out with the charter operator before the day rather than on the dock.

Do you cover ceremonies on the mainland and the reception on an island, or the reverse?

Yes. Splitting the day between the mainland and an island is common in the Whitsundays. The ferry timings and the equipment transfer are planned into the run sheet so the music is set up and sound-checked before your guests arrive at each location.

Do you bring your own PA and equipment?

Yes. A full PA, microphones, stands and cabling are included in every package, along with setup and pack-down. For beach and lawn ceremonies away from mains power, battery-powered sound covers the ceremony without needing a generator.

Can you play both the ceremony and the reception?

Yes. The most common booking in the Whitsundays covers arrival and ceremony music, then canapés, then the reception, up to four hours of live music across the day. Ceremony-only bookings are also available.

Will you learn our first dance song?

Yes. One song of your choosing is learned and performed live as part of the ceremony and reception package, at no extra cost. Requests for the rest of the day are welcome from a repertoire of over 500 songs.

How far in advance should we book?

For Whitsundays weddings in the peak May to September season, six to twelve months ahead is sensible, since the same weekends fill quickly across every island. Shorter notice is often still possible outside peak season.

Do you travel between the mainland and the islands?

Yes. Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Long Island, Hayman Island and Daydream Island are all covered, and island transfers and equipment logistics are handled as part of the booking rather than left to you.

What style of music do you play?

Solo acoustic guitar and vocals, drawing on folk, blues, pop, soul and country. Sets range from quiet background music during canapés to an upbeat set for a dance floor, and the tone is matched to the room rather than fixed in advance.
